Retainers after Invisalign Treatment

Retainers help prevent teeth from shifting after Invisalign. They’re usually needed long term, often for life. Options include clear, Hawley, and fixed retainers. Costs vary, and CDCP doesn’t cover orthodontic retention.
Table of Contents

After completing Invisalign treatment, you’ll generally need retainers to help keep your teeth in their new positions. Invisalign aligners move your teeth, while retainers help maintain the results and reduce the risk of shifting. The right type of retainers after Invisalign treatment and how often you need to wear it depend on your dental professional’s instructions. In this guide we help you know about retainer wear time, available options, daily care, common problems, and costs.

Why Do You Need a Retainer After Invisalign?

Even after Invisalign treatment, your teeth can gradually shift. This is called orthodontic relapse, and it can happen as the tissues supporting your teeth adapt and your teeth change position over time. Wearing a retainer helps maintain your alignment, although some movement may still occur.

If you skip your retainer regularly, your teeth may move away from their treated positions and affect your bite. Your final Invisalign aligner is not automatically a long-term replacement for a retainer. Aligners move teeth, while retainers help hold them in place.

How Long Do You Need to Wear a Retainer After Invisalign?

You’ll likely need to wear a retainer long term after Invisalign, often for life, to help maintain your results. We recommend a wear schedule based on your treatment and how your teeth respond after Invisalign or clear aligner treatment.

Do You Need to Wear Your Retainer Full-Time at First?

We may recommend full-time retainer wear at first, depending on your treatment needs. The required hours can vary, so we’ll explain how often you should wear yours. Follow your dentist’s instructions about removing your retainer for meals and cleaning, and put it back in as directed.

When Can You Switch to Nighttime Retainer Wear?

We’ll advise you when, or if, you can switch to nighttime wear based on your treatment and your teeth’s stability. Don’t reduce your wear time just because your teeth look straight. Consistent retention helps maintain their position.

Do You Have to Wear a Retainer Forever?

We generally recommend long-term retention because teeth can shift over time, even years after Invisalign. This doesn’t mean you must wear a removable retainer all day forever. We may adjust your schedule over time, depending on your needs. If you’re unsure whether you can reduce your wear time, check with us first.

Research Back-up:
The ideal retainer-wear schedule is not the same for every patient. A critical review of orthodontic retainers highlights the lack of a single established retention protocol, supporting an individualized approach to long-term wear.

What Type of Retainer Is Best After Invisalign?

There’s no single best retainer for everyone after Invisalign. As part of our orthodontic care in Oakville, we consider your treatment results, which teeth need support, your oral hygiene habits, and your preferences when recommending an option. Here’s how the main types compare:

Retainer typeAppearanceRemovable?Care requirementsKey limitations
Clear retainerTransparent and discreetYesClean regularly and wear as directedCan crack, wear out, or lose its fit
Hawley retainerVisible wire and acrylicYesClean regularly and store safelyMore noticeable than clear retainers
Fixed retainerWire bonded behind selected teethNoBrush carefully and clean around the wirePlaque buildup and possible wire or bonding failure

Research Note: A 2023 Cochrane review included 47 studies involving 4,377 participants but found insufficient high-certainty evidence to establish one retainer type as the best choice for everyone.

What Is Vivera?

Vivera is a branded clear-retainer option made by Align Technology, the company behind Invisalign. It’s one option to discuss with us, but completing Invisalign doesn’t automatically mean you’ll receive Vivera.

Can You Use Both Fixed and Removable Retainers?

Yes. We may recommend both types in selected cases, depending on your alignment and retention needs. However, using both isn’t necessary for everyone. We’ll consider your circumstances and oral hygiene habits when advising you on suitable options.

How to Care for Your Retainer After Invisalign

Good retainer care helps keep it clean, and also protect its fit, and extend its usable life. Here are a few simple habits to follow:

  • Clean your clear retainer daily: Rinse it after removal and clean it regularly with a non-abrasive product suitable for your retainer. Avoid hot water, abrasive toothpaste, and harsh household cleaners, which can damage or scratch the plastic.
  • Store it safely: Keep your retainer in its protective case whenever you’re not wearing it. Avoid wrapping it in a napkin, leaving it near heat, or placing it where pets can reach it.
  • Remove it for meals and drinks: Take out removable retainers before eating and drinking anything other than water, unless we give you different instructions.
  • Clean around fixed retainers carefully: Brush around the bonded wire and use suitable flossing aids or interdental brushes to clean between your teeth. Plaque can collect around the wire, so keep up with regular dental checkups.

If your retainer develops cracks, becomes difficult to clean, or no longer fits properly, contact us for advice rather than trying to repair or adjust it yourself.

FAQ

Are Invisalign Retainers the Same as Invisalign Aligners?

No. Invisalign aligners gradually move teeth into position, while retainers help maintain the alignment achieved after treatment.

Can You Eat or Drink With a Clear Retainer?

Remove removable retainers before eating. Drink only water while wearing them to avoid staining, trapping sugars, or damaging the plastic.

How Often Should You Replace an Invisalign Retainer?

There’s no fixed replacement schedule. Replace your retainer if it cracks, warps, wears out, or no longer fits properly, following your dentist’s advice.

Can You Switch to a Different Type of Retainer?

Yes, but consult your dentist first. They can assess your alignment and retention needs to determine whether another type is suitable.

What If My Retainer Feels Tight or No Longer Fits?

Don’t force it if it causes pain or won’t fit properly. Contact your dentist, as your teeth may have shifted or the retainer may need replacement.

What If My Retainer Breaks or You Lose It?

Contact your dentist promptly to arrange a replacement or assess the damage. Delaying replacement can allow your teeth to shift.

Can a Retainer Straighten Teeth That Have Shifted?

No. Retainers maintain alignment rather than actively straighten teeth. Your dentist can assess whether you need a replacement retainer or additional orthodontic treatment.

What If My Fixed Retainer Wire Becomes Loose?

Contact your dentist promptly. Avoid pulling or bending the wire, and have it checked to prevent further damage or unwanted tooth movement.
