Dental Clinic for University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) Students

Every full-time UTM undergraduate is paying for dental coverage, used or not. It runs through Green Shield Canada, and it resets on August 31. Smile Point Dental is a general dental office in Oakville, 16 km south of campus. We serve UTM students with their coverage, and we bill it directly.

We Accept Your UTMSU Health & Dental Plan

UTMSU is a Green Shield Canada plan for full-time undergrads, and APUS is the one for part-time students. We bill Green Shield directly, so the claim goes in from our office. Your member ID is a prefix, your student number, then -00. So:
If you are Your ID looks like
Full-time undergraduate UTM…-00
Part-time undergraduate APU…-00

If you’ve got no card, it’s in the GreenShield+ app.

Graduate students at UTM are covered through UTGSU instead. Bring the card, and we’ll check it at the desk.

UTMSU Coverage Through Green Shield Canada

The plan year runs from September 1 to August 31. Whatever you haven’t used by August 31 is gone. It doesn’t roll into next year. Check what’s covered in the table below:

Treatment Plan pays You pay
Checkups, cleanings, polishing, scaling, X-rays 70% 30%
Fillings, extractions, anesthesia 60% 40%
Periodontal scaling 70% 30%
Dental work after an accident 100% Nothing

Part-Time Students: APUS Coverage

Part-time undergraduates aren’t on the UTMSU plan. They are on APUS, a separate plan through the same insurer. But nothing changes at our end except the prefix on your ID. If you are not sure which one you’re on, part-time status is set by your credit load, and it’s on your ACORN invoice.

International Students: Using UHIP With Your UTMSU Plan

UHIP is your medical coverage. It handles doctor visits and hospital care, but it does NOT handle dental. OHIP does NOT pay for dental either, so Canadian students are in the same position. Your dental coverage comes from the UTMSU plan instead. The only students without it are the ones who opted out in September. So when you come in, bring your GreenShield card, not your UHIP card.

Dental Care Between Lectures

Our weekday appointments run to 7 pm, Saturdays to 5 pm.
Wisdom teeth erupt between 17 and 25. That’s why this comes up more than anything else at this age. Our panoramic x-ray shows whether yours need to come out or can stay in.

We usually have a same-day slot for emergencies. It would be best if you call in the morning. Use it instead of trying to get through exam week on painkillers.

Exam, x-rays, and a cleaning in one appointment. At 70%, the best-covered thing on your plan, and the one most students never claim.
We do root canal therapy here rather than referring you elsewhere, which matters to you as a student. Worth asking about your remaining balance first, since this is the treatment that runs past $800.

Composite, colour-matched, usually one visit. Covered at 60% under basic restorative.

No Upfront Cost: We Bill Green Shield Directly

We submit the claim straight to Green Shield from our office at the end of your appointment. Green Shield pays its portion to us, and you just pay the remainder. If you’re new to the plan this year, there’s a blackout period at the start of term while UTM confirms your enrolment with Green Shield. For:

Fall and Winter students: it ran from September 1 to mid-November.
For January-start students: January 1 to early March.
Upper-year students usually skip it, unless fees were deferred or paid late.
During the blackout, direct billing won’t go through. You are still covered. You pay at the visit, keep the receipt, and submit the claim once it lifts.
